“The Wave” by Iris Schieferstein at Berlin Ostbahnhof

To mark World Oceans Day on June 8, Deutsche Bahn is exhibiting the artwork The Wave by artist Iris Schieferstein at Berlin Ostbahnhof from June 7 to September 17, 2025.

The sculptural piece consists of more than 10,000 oyster shells, which the artist collected over the course of a year and assembled into a three-dimensional object of monumental presence. With The Wave, Iris Schieferstein created a work of exceptional symbolic power, juxtaposing the immense beauty of the oceans with their increasing vulnerability. The sea—long regarded as inexhaustible—now stands as a symbol of the fragility of the global ecological balance.

A commitment by Deutsche Bahn to sustainability and cultural dialogue

Deutsche Bahn is honored to be the first to exhibit The Wave to the public. The large-scale sculpture, covering around 20 square meters of the main foyer at Berlin Ostbahnhof, is more than an artistic statement—it is a call for sustainability and responsible use of natural resources.
